How far is a klick away?

Happy new year!  I started off the new year by binge watching Homeland Season 4 (which was excellent).  At various points, characters said that something/someone was a number of klicks away. That made me wonder what a klick was and how far it was.  A klick is military parlance for 1000 meters and has been around since the Vietnam War. There are different reasons given for how it got its name.

2014 in review

It has been fun returning to blogging after I sputtered the first time out in 2012! Here is a review of my (half year) in blogging – thanks to all who have been reading. I hope the blog is entertaining for you. Happy new year!

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 870 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 15 trips to carry that many people.

Pakistan is an acronym

I am a little late to Season 4 of Homeland. I started watching it last night and was intrigued by a line in the premiere that Pakistan is an acronym.  I confess that I was not aware of that and looked it up. It is, indeed, an acronym. There are a couple of different descriptions of what it stands for.  Check out this description and this compilation.  Very interesting!

After listening to Serial for the last couple of months (in fact, this is my second post about it), I realize that for all of the Mail…Kimp? jokes out there and with all of the publicity has received by being Serial’s first sponsor, I don’t know what they do.

So, since the podcast is now over and I have time on my hands, I decided to read up on Mailchimp. It’s only right, as its sponsorship helped to bring this important story to the masses.

I wasn’t sure what Mailchimp meant when it marketed itself as allowing people to send better email, but now I have a better idea.  It is like Constant Contact and StreamSend.  If I ever am in the market to get a new email service I will definitely take a look at Mailchimp!

I also found this very interesting article about the business behind the Serial sponsorship.

And one final Serial note — if you haven’t seen the Funny o Die Serial parody, take a few minutes and watch it. If you have listened to all of Serial you will find so many inside jokes and spot on observations and impressions:

Resorts in Cuba

Now that the U.S. is beginning to normalize relations with Cuba, I am excited to one day soon travel there.  I have always been intrigued by the Cuban culture, love, love, love Cuban food, and as a huge fan of all things Caribbean, have been wanting to experience Cuba for a long time.

Yes, there are many deep political issues to think about and to reflect on the effects of the 50 year embargo, but for now, I will focus on the prospect of finally getting to go to Cuba, hopefully one day soon!

From tripadvisor.ca (note not tripadvisor.com!), I found this list of top hotels in Cuba.  This virtual tourist guide is also helpful and well as the National Geographic Guide.
